Insecure attachment styles in relationships stem from inconsistent caregiving during childhood. There are different types of insecure attachment—avoidant, anxious, disorganized etc— which shape individuals' beliefs and behaviours in their relationships. Avoidant individuals avoid intimacy, anxious individuals seek constant reassurance, and disorganized individuals display erratic behaviours. These attachment styles significantly impact romantic relationships. Avoidant individuals struggle with emotional closeness and trust, anxious individuals experience jealousy and possessiveness, and disorganized individuals grapple with dissociation and fear of intimacy. While attachment styles can be challenging, therapy, can help individuals develop healthier, more secure ways of relating to others and forming and maintaining healthy relationships. We specialise in working with attachment difficulties at Cork Couples Counselling and helping people move to more towards more secure attachment in relationships.
